Subject: Urgently want to contact needy ESM and widows

We are all aware of the indifference of the Government towards the Ex Servicemen community, and the war widows.
The plight of the latter is worse, since having lost the emotional and economic anchor of their lives, they face upto a rude and arrogant system that has little time for them.
A TV channel is planning to do a series of programs on the plight of ex servicemen and widows who having lost their husbands on duty, have had the Government GO BACK / DELAY on its commitment / duty to LOOK AFTER the surviving family.
Do You Know any one in that predicament?
If so, let me have the following details.
Name of Widow/ Parent/ ESM.
Contact Number (Preferably Mobile)
Address (or at the least the Town/ village).
Short case study. (What happened? When?etc)
Can you help with local liasion? Like passing e mail messages?
You may wish to share it on your network. We keep forwarding so many mails, here is one we should. Genuinely.
An early response is requested as shooting would commence this week end or so. Thanks.

Vetrans,

This is really sad. Some one in Mhow should take up and persuade the Stn Cdr to see reason.

Will be a good idea to approach the Area/ Corps/ Army Cdrs, if some one knows them and can do so.

Good morning to all the recipi=nts of this letter.
I am Col.HV Mankotia's daughter.I would like=to share an incident, with you, which happened with my father. But at the ou=set I would like to tell you that I'm not writing this letter on beh=lf or with the knowledge of my father.
This concerns a case my f=ther has been fighting with the army for over a year now.I'm not going to =et into the details of the case or the merits of it.The decision,in which,=as already been granted in favour of my father ,in a lower court. The basic=facts are that my father has a house in Mhow the route to which passes thr=ugh defence land at the end of which is a stream(which is not part of defe=ce land)over which he has constructed a bridge.
This particular incide=t happened about 3 weeks back,2 days after my father was served a notice.O= that monday morning the Stn Cdr,the Adm Commadant came to oversee a working party which had been sent to dig trenches enroute to my father's=house(the said route being part of defence land and the said notice not be=ng about the route)This was at about 7 in the morning. My father told the S=n Cdr that he had to be given time to reply to the notice.(The notice had =een sent on a friday and it concerned the bridge to our house.)The Stn Cdr=told him -I CANNOT DO THAT.IT WILL GIVE YOU TIME TO GET A STAY ORDER.Then my father re=uested him to atleast be allowed to take his cars out.The Stn Cdr REFUSED,=aying YOU CAN ADD THAT TO THE CHARGES AGAINST ME.
Iam angry, appalled an= completely disillusioned by this event. Is this the way to behave with an =fficer? So what if he is retired!Forget about the due process of law, that h=s been utterly disregarded. This is about basic decency and manners. This is=about harrasement, when there is nothing else to do.My mother suffers from a medical problem where there have been times she haS had to be rushed to =he MH in the middle of the night to be put on a drip.Fortunately 3 days ba=k it happened early in the evening so they spent the night at my grandfath=r's place in case they needed to go to the MH.
My endevour is no= to garner support for my father but to bring to light an incident that co=ld happen to anyone. Is it too much to ask to be treated with dignity espec=ally from people who are in the same organisation to which my father devot=d his best years? It is extremely disturbing and painful to see one's paren=s being harassed in this manner.I need to have my faith restored,my belief=restored that its worth being part of this organisation...and I am in a wa= part of it.It is the only life I've seen.
Thanking you,
Regards,

Dear Sirs,

This is my second reiteration - "I thought the IESM Core Group had unanimously decided to remain apolotical!!"

If I am right in my understanding, Core Gruop would do well to spread that message to all during their visits to various places promoting the cause of IESM only, rather than hobnobbing with some political outfit or the other for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Warm regards.

Dear Sir,

The decision to issue such a letter by CSD India was most ill timed and smacks of favoritism. Let me elaborate:

CSD India issued the letter at a time(17 Mar 09) knowing well that there was a scramble to buy Honda cars before 31 Mar 09, since Honda had announced its decision to escalate the prices of all cars by min Rs 30,000 upto Rs 1.5 Lakhs wef 01 Apr 09.

On 23 Mar 09, as I approached CSD Jallandhar with a Draft of Rs 7,04,129 ( Chandigarh price) for purchasing Honda City from Prestige Honda Chandigarh, I was informed of this ill timed letter of CSD India dtd 17 Mar 09. I was thus forced to make an additional draft of Rs 21,844/- so as to collect the car from Ludhiana dealer, because by now Prestige Honda Chandigarh had got the wind and refused to entertain any requests from defence personnel buying through CSD Ambala...saying that they were out of stock. I spoke to Prestige Honda Chandigarh personally and was advised by them to buy from any other outlet of theirs in Punjab, since they were out of stock in their Chandigarh outlet. Incidentally all Punjab outlets referred to by CSD Jallandhar are owned by Prestige Honda.

Thus CSD India by their ill timed and unwarranted decision & Prestige Honda Chandigarh by hoarding, have connived with each other to cause losses to Defence personnel.

There is yet another mystery I need to solve. I have paid Rs 7,25, 793 by DD to CSD Jallandhar but the billing by Horizon Honda, Ludhiana(Dada Motors) is for Rs 7,22,361 all inclusive. So where has the balance amount of Rs 3432 gone? Can anyone please elaborate?

DEAR FRIENDS,

I DO NOT SEE MUCH GREAT FUTURE FOR THIS IESM+IESL 'COALITION' CONSIDERING THE DITHERINGS AND LACK OF SPIRIT OF GIVE & TAKE AND ACCOMMODATION AS CAN BE READ/ INTERPRETED FROM THE ENCLOSED MAIL. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO 'COMMON MINIMUM PROGRAMME', MANIFESTO OR CLEAR LINE OF ACTION DEFINED. HOPE THE 12TH APRIL SHOW GOES WITHOUT ANY HICCUPS. ALL THE VERY BEST. BRIG M K JAIN, VETERAN.

SIR, JAI HIND,

Till recent past I did not know that all Secretaries, Judges, MPs , MLA,s etc already draw one rank one pension. This I came to know only from the Hindi write up in Panjab Kesari written by Karan Thaper which appeared on 1st March 09. A common man in the street has been questioning about our demand of OROP. So far we have been only explaining about our hard life and early retirement. I suggest, we collect some statistics on OROP enjoyed by the this category of people and inform the general public. . Our own people would also be able to put their point across forcefully.

Under the RTI Act I had asked from the Lok Sabha Sectt about the Pensions, Pay allws & perks of a MP. The reply is " every person who has served for any period as a member of the Provisional Parliament or either House of Parliament is eligible for a pension." A MP is eligible for pension on taking oath in the Parliament and drawing first salary. The starting pension is Rs 8000/= PM , it is up to 5 years service and thereafter, Rs 800/= is added on completion of every addl year.
We should also claim pension for our ex-servicemen brothern who were sent on Reserve or left service rather forced to leave service before completiong pensionable service . We should also claim pension for the period of Re-employment which was put up by the Officers. A period of 5 to 6 years re-employed service cannot be ignored. REGARDS- JAI HIND

Dear Kamboj,

Today I saw the email giving the position on "Toll Tax" on roads which , in fact is an extension of privileges , like the CSD facilities to veterans and needs new enactment if necessary so that the privileges of serving soldiers that helped them financially while in service are continued after retirement. After all, the pension is fixed as 50% of the serving pay while the perks like exemption from toll tax was available. This needs our attention, besides the fight for OROP.

I am enclosing a news item that shows that the veterans in UK are also fighting for their privileges. This would help our struggle as a world view about veterans who need to be given a special status in society. The need for the army's intervention in the efforts for internal security, besides external threats is only increasing with the events close to our borders; what with the Taliban attack on Police Training Centre in Lahore on 30 Mar 09, so close to our borders.

Veterans win fight for 'smart ID cards'
Four million ex-servicemen and women to get priority for health, housing and benefits
By Terri Judd
Monday, 30 March 2009
Four million former servicemen and women are to be given veterans' cards to ensure they get priority treatment for NHS healthcare and housing, and discounts for services such as transport.

The Ministry of Defence plans to introduce the cards at the beginning of 2010, The Independent has learnt, in an attempt to begin repairing the damage done to the military covenant between nation and armed forces under New Labour.
The launch is expected to be formally announced this autumn with the first veterans' cards handed to new armed forces leavers in spring next year, before being rolled out to the country's four million former service personnel.
The aim is to ensure that those who have risked their lives in combat get front-of-the-queue treatment and financial benefits. Similar systems in the US and France offer veterans subsidised travel and discounts from private companies.
At a time when the armed forces have been stretched to breaking point in two bloody conflicts, there has been mounting anger that the priority treatment promised by the Government 18 months ago has failed to materialise. "We now need to make it happen," the Defence minister Kevan Jones told this newspaper. "We will provide veterans' ID cards so the person can say 'I have served in the services' and get priority access to treatment." Mr Jones spoke in response to this newspaper's campaign to get better mental health treatment for traumatised troops, launched after the Victoria Cross winner Johnson Beharry – the country's most decorated serving soldier – revealed his own combat-related trauma and urged the Government to stop failing his fellow soldiers with sub-standard or non-existent care.
Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers, who until last year was Adjutant-General in charge of personnel, welcomed the veterans' card. "It is about value and self worth, not about a piece of plastic," he said. "We carry these cards for the whole of our service and when we leave we are required to hand them in. Psychologically, it is a bad thing. It is a little bit of plastic but it represents who you are and what you did."
The Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, former commanding officer with the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, said: "It is about bloody time. At last, a reasonable, sensible minister [Mr Jones] who listens to ideas from across the political spectrum."
The categories in the Forces Discount Scheme currently include some retraining, sports clubs, childcare, insurance, holidays and travel.
Veterans and senior soldiers have called on the Government to acknowledge a predicted "explosion" of traumatised troops from recent conflicts and provide specialist mental healthcare. "No one is suggesting there is not a problem," Mr Jones said, "but we need a grounded debate to understand it."
He admitted that many former servicemen were "lost" in the NHS system and vowed to ensure every GP was made to record whether or not a patient had served in the forces.
However, he refused to concede that former service personnel needed separate, dedicated care and risked the wrath of charities by suggesting they should fund provision of military health advisers. "Combat Stress [the charity] gets £3m of taxpayers' money. I don't think the Government should do it all. It is not about money. It is about the system working better."
